What is considered as overweight?
People usually gain excess weight if for an extended period of time they consume more calories than they burn. Excess calories are stored as fat. Not all people who are overweight are such because of a high calorie diet.
It may take years for a person to become overweight because of a slight imbalance in the relation between calories in versus calories burned. In our society it is reasonably easy to become overweight as we are exposed to high sugar foods and the need for physical activity is close to nonexistent.
It is not your fault that you have a tendency to become overweight but you have the power to do something about it.
A lot of people do not know what is considered overweight. You can figure it out by using your height and weight or your waist circumference.
BMI - Body Mass Index
International obesity research generally uses the BMI to estimate if a person is overweight or in a normal range of body mass.
A BMI between 18.5 and 25 is considered normal and to be the healthiest. If your BMI is between 25 and 30 you are considered overweight. A BMI above 30 is considered obese. The BMI intervals apply to all grownups and indicate the degree of overweight. BMI does not evaluate the ratio between muscles and fat. Because muscle mass has a higher density than fat, a person with a high muscle mass will also have a high BMI but is not considered overweight. For example, a male who works out a lot might have a high BMI but might not be overweight.
